A great deal of research was undertaken in Curtin University’s 2012 trip to Lakhnu that helped to identify issues experienced in the village.  This research included the survey of over 70 dwellings, the mapping and documentation of the village, the completion of several community workshops, research into the feasibility of restoring the local school’s heritage building, and the completion of questionnaires that established the demographic profile of the village. This preliminary research identified that sanitation issues, women’s safety concerns associated with sanitation issues, the lighting and ventilation of dwellings, the lack of a play space for the local children (in particular the girls), and the limited protection of valued heritage and cultural sites are problems that the village experience. This trip has successfully laid the foundations for all projects that have followed in future years.
