A project team comprising of key researchers at Curtin University (Western Australia) and local non-government organization (NGO) IREAD (Indian Rural Education and Development) began engaging with an Indian village and its residents in 2009. Since then extensive primary and secondary research has been undertaken both to gain a holistic understanding of the issues that Lakhnu face as a developing rural village and how these can be alleviated. The project aims to empower the local community at Lakhnu while developing a model of best practice in research and teaching.

The Lakhnu Sustainable Rural Development Project has developed a number of fields of activity that have delivered tangible results on the ground. This project targets many areas of interest to the University, including heritage, community, sanitation, health and development.

Curtin staff involved in this project include: Associate Professor Reena Tiwari (Director), Professor John Stephens, Associate Professor Dianne Smith, Jake Schapper and Professor Dave Hedgcock.
